Play refers to a range of voluntary, intrinsically motivated activities that are normally associated with pleasure and enjoyment. Play may consist of amusing, pretend or imaginary interpersonal and intrapersonal interactions or interplay. The rites of play are evident throughout nature and are perceived in people and animals, particularly in the cognitive development and socialization of those engaged in developmental processes and the young. Play often entertains props, tools, animals, or toys in the context of learning and recreation. Some play has clearly defined goals and when structured with rules is entitled a game. Whereas, some play exhibits no such goals nor rules and is considered to be "unstructured" in the literature.

Playing Children, by Chinese Song Dynasty artist Su Hanchen, c. 1150 AD.

Concerted endeavor has been made to identify the qualities of play, but this task is not without its ambiguities. For example, play is commonly perceived as a frivolous and non-serious activity; yet when watching children at play, one can observe the transfixed seriousness and entrancing absorption with which they engage in it. Other criteria of play include a relaxed pace and freedom versus compulsion. Yet play seems to have its intrinsic constraints as in, "You're not playing fair."

When play is structured and goal orientated it is often presented as a game. Play can also be seen as the activity of rehearsing life events e.g. young animals play fighting. Play may also serve as a pretext, allowing people to explore reactions of others by engaging in playful interaction. Flirting is an example of such behavior. These and other concepts or rhetorics of play are discussed at length by Brian Sutton-Smith in the book The Ambiguity of Play. Sometimes play is dangerous, such as in extreme sports. This type of play could be considered stunt play, whether engaging in play frighting, sky-diving, or riding a device at high speed in an unusual manner.

Types of play listed by psychiatrist Dr. Stuart Brown include: body, object, social, fantasy, and transformational. The National Institute for Play describes the previous five play types, as well as the play types attunement and narrative.

If i play trombone and i started playing trumpet, would it be easier to play higher notes?
Q. I've been playing trombone for about 3 years and the highest note i can hit is a C twice above the staff. Since the trumpet mouth piece is smaller, would it be easier or harder for me to hit higher notes?
Asked by Jamin Lastname - Wed Apr 15 22:17:19 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Yes. Technically, it is easier to hit the higher notes, but then again, the trumpet is also shorter, with a smaller bell. I played trombone all through school (grade 5 or 6 - 12), and also some bugle (along with a few other instruments). I found playing the smaller mouthpiece more painful overall. You really have to scrunch your lips up. You need less wind, but it found it harder to play, especially getting the embouchure right.

How can I become obsessed with playing guitar?
Q. I have been playing guitar for about two years now and while i enjoy playing, I find myself getting distracted and I don't play as much as I should. I love music, and I wish guitar was something I was more involved in. I have been taking lessons and all but I wish i could practice a lot without getting distracted or bored. How do I become obsessed with playing guitar?

A. Ive had the same problem a while back, my problem was the exact same thing but the thing is i was starting to hate the guitar, so what i did was to start listening to music just with the guitar, found a few songs i liked out of the ones i heard, and put myself to learn them and i shud mention that i quit guitar classes and did some learning by myself. But while learning those songs i learned a shitload of new techniques like for example, tremolo because of recuerdos de la alhambra and other stuff. So my point is just chill with that and listen to guitar music a lot more if u alrdy dont and just find out what u like best. I think i typed too much.

Q. When I change to a different slide, the music stops playing. How can I make it play the entire time?

A. I see it. Please follow these guides: If you are using PowerPoint 2003 To make a sound continue through multiple or all slides, follow these steps: 1. Go to the slide where you want to begin your audio track (defaulted as the first slide), and select Insert -> Movies and Sounds -> Sound from File to insert the sound. 2. After you click OK, you can see a message pop up asking how you want the sound to start in slide shows. Click Automatically. 3. Select Slide Show ->Custom Animation to enter the Custom Animation pane. Your soundtrack is listed below in the pane. 4. In the drop-down list of the sound, choose Effect Options. Then the Play Sound interface appears. In the Effect tab, click the radio button beside Stop Playing After XXX… [cont.]
